A newly married M.Tech. student was allegedly hacked to death by her husband, a lecturer in a private engineering college, over dowry, in Basaveshwaranagar.

The victim identified as Preeta (28), a student of BMS College of Engineering, got married to Santosh Kumar (32), eight months ago.

Preliminary enquiries by the police revealed that Santosh, a lecturer at Nadgir Institute of Engineering and Technology, was allegedly demanding Rs. 5 lakh from Preeta, claiming that he had to pay a bribe to get his job confirmed.

Preeta’s family members reportedly requested time till January. They said they had spent nearly Rs. 15 lakh for the wedding.

Wife harassed

Angry about this, Santosh Kumar reportedly asked Preeta not to pursue her studies, police said. He asked her to stay back at home if she was not bringing the money, the police claimed.

The accused also allegedly harassed her, demanding money and gold jewellery. On Monday night, the accused picked up a quarrel with his wife, leading to heated argument. Santosh allegedly took a machete and hit his wife on her head.

He later took her to Columbia Asia hospital, where she died on Tuesday night. Based on information provided by the hospital authorities, the Malleswaram police detained Santosh on Monday and booked him for attempt to murder initially. He was later booked for murder after Preeta died.
