Lakshmi’s dying declaration recorded for second time

The previous declaration was not recorded in the presence of an Executive Magistrate

A day after Lakshmi Devi (28), a domestic help, attempted suicide by setting herself ablaze owing to alleged police torture, City Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar on Monday visited the hospital along with a magistrate to record her statement afresh.

The need for recording her “dying declaration” for the second time in two days arose as the first statement had not been recorded by an Executive Magistrate as per procedure. It had been recorded by a doctor at the insistence of the police.

Lakshmi, a physically handicapped mother of two children, went missing for more than a month after the Vidyaranyapura police picked her up on charges of stealing saris from the house of her employer, on June 17.

She was traced only on Saturday in Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh and brought back to the city. The police allegedly tortured her on the pretext of enquiry and forced her to confess to the theft from her employer’s house, her family members alleged.
