A construction labourer was killed and two others were injured when the roof of an old building that was partly demolished in Chickpet, caved in early on Saturday.
Noor Alam (20), along with Abdul Barak and Nazarullah Islam, all from West Bengal, were sleeping in one of the rooms in the building on R.T. Street when a portion of the roof collapsed.
In the complaint given to the police, the labourers said they had demolished a portion of the building on Friday night and decided to sleep inside as it was raining and they couldn’t go to their houses.. However, around 1 a.m., the roof started to cave in.
Residents, who heard their cries for help, rushed to the building. They called the Fire and Emergency Services personnel when they found the labourers under the debris. Police officials said the residents joined the fire officials to extricate the labourers and the three were rushed to Victoria Hospital. Noor Alam was declared brought dead and Abdul and Nazarullah are being treated at the hospital for minor injuries. The Chickpet police said the three labourers had been hired by two contractors. The police booked a case of death by negligence against the contractors and the building owners.
