All the 1,310 shops in the Sri Krishna Rajendra Market will remain closed on Tuesday on account of a bandh called by the merchants’ welfare association.
The association has taken objection to over 15 unauthorised shops that have come up in various entry points and fire exits. “The BBMP, which enforces building byelaws, is the violator now. Who will take responsibility if there is a major fire in the market? Over the past 17 years, there have been six major fires in the market,” pointed out G.M. Divakar, president of S.K.R. Market Merchants’ Welfare Association, and added that the estimated loss incurred by the bandh could run up to Rs. 40 lakh.
