The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has directed the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation (KPTCL) to pay ₹40 lakh compensation to a six-year-old who suffered from burns after coming in contact with a high-tension wire.

After the September 2017 incident, the boy’s parents approached the commission seeking redressal. The boy, Muizz Ahmed Sharif, is still yet to make a complete recovery and has to visit the hospital often, said his father Maqsood Ahmed Sharif. He expressed doubts about whether his son would be able to go back to school and lead a regular life.

The parents, however, are relieved with the commission’s direction to compensate their son. “He will have to undergo multiple surgeries and this amount will help us clear all the hospital bills,” Mr. Sharif said.

When Muizz Ahmed was playing in his house when he came in contact with the HT wire passing over the terrace. He was hospitalised for a month and half.

Kripa Alva, chairperson of the commission, said the money would help the child undergo plastic surgery.
