Braving the heat and the searing sun, civic-minded citizens in H.S.R. Layout, Domlur, Indiranagar, Sanjay Nagar and Sampangiramnagar, among others, spent Sunday trying to get rid of illegal posters, banners, stickers and billboards which contribute to ‘visual’ pollution.
The #KillBills Campaign was a call for all citizen groups in Bengaluru to take the initiative in their locality on Sunday with the aim of making it a city-wide event. Totally, 11 localities participated in the campaign. The BBMP extended all help with several ward officers participating.
Kavitha Reddy of Hasiru Mithra and the BPAC Civic Hub co-ordinated this event in H.S.R. Layout.
“We covered more than two kilometres in the neighbourhood, pulling down billboards and illegal hoardings. Even traffic cops helped us remove some traffic warnings too since they were being used by unscrupulous people to sneak in advertisements,” she said.
In Sanjaynagar, the initiative was organised by the Citizens for Sustainability, who regularly organise drives against plastic.
“We chose the main road for this initiative, taking down illegal advertisements and posters as well as asking citizens to be more civic conscious and not contribute to the city’s visual pollution,” said Subbaiah T.S., a member of Citizens for Sustainability.
Other participants were BPAC Civic Hub teams in 10 wards, the IChangeIndiranagar team and some RWAs.
