Soon patients visiting the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology will not be made to run from one department to another to get medical services. The institute is all set to be upgraded on the lines of Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Hospital.
Announcing this on Tuesday, Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil said a system of disease-wise bifurcation of the out patient department (OPD) would be put in place soon. “This will ensure that any patient who comes to the hospital for treatment can meet all doctors related to the disease in a single OPD visit,” the Minister said.
He was speaking after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated the first floor of the paediatric block in the institute donated by the State Bank of Mysore (SBM).
Stating that the proposal had already been approved by the institute’s Governing Council, the Minister said, “This, along with procurement of advanced equipment, including a pet scan, will make Kidwai a comprehensive cancer care centre.”
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the government would offer the required financial assistance to upgrade the institute into a regional cancer centre. Considering the increase in patient flow to the hospital, the government is ready to provide funds if the institute wants to add more beds to the existing 640 beds.
