July 16, 2013 10:17 am | Updated 10:17 am IST - BANGALORE:

A 28-year-old man, working as a contract employee in the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), Malleswaram, allegedly tried to commit suicide in the Vidhana Soudha on Monday afternoon, right outside the office of Higher Education Minister R.V. Deshpande, whom he had gone to meet.

According to the police, Anand, resident of Kadugodi, went to meet the Minister to complain about the alleged harassment meted out to him by senior officials. While waiting in front of the Minister’s chamber, Anand consumed poison. Other people who were waiting to meet the Minister rushed him to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital.

Doctors at the Bowring Hospital said that Anand was out of danger and had been shifted to a ward.

Meanwhile, S.P. Kulkarni, Administrative Officer, KEA, told reporters that the KEA had requested the company which had outsourced him for a job as a peon to recall him on the grounds of being routinely irregular and late to work. “We found out that he had taken a bribe of Rs. 5 lakh from a parent in February this year promising to get his/her child a medical seat,” he added.

A case of attempt to suicide has been registered.
