The first Karnataka Teacher Eligibility Test (KARTET), a mandatory qualifying test for those wishing to take up teaching positions in primary schools, will be held on Sunday. As many as 3.77 lakh candidates are expected to appear for the test at 694 centres across the State.
The test has been introduced to usher in national standards in teacher quality and recruitment process based on the Right to Education Act and the National Council for Teacher Education guidelines.
The qualifying test applies to teaching positions in government, aided and private institutions.
The examination, to be conducted for two papers, was postponed twice due to technical reasons. Also, a large number of candidates had alleged that their admission ticket had erroneous entries pertaining to medium and languages.
While Paper 1 will be conducted in six mediums for those aspiring to teach for Class 1 to Class 5, Paper 2 will be conducted in seven mediums for those aspiring to teach for Class 6 to Class 8.
While about 1.87 lakh candidates are expected to appear for Paper 1, scheduled between 9.30 a.m. and 12 noon, around 2.14 lakh candidates are expected to write Paper 2, scheduled between 2 p.m. and 4.30 p.m., a press release issued by the Centralised Admission Cell, Department of Public Instruction, said. Visually impaired candidates, writing with the help of a scribe, will get half an hour additional time and also have alternative questions.
To obtain KARTET certificate, general category candidates have to secure a minimum of 60 per cent while candidates from the reserved category have to score a minimum of 55 per cent.
The release said candidates could appear for the next TET if they fail to clear the test this time.
