Gone are the days when cyber cafes across the city were filled with students anxiously awaiting SSLC and PU results. With the advancement in technology and the advent of smart phones, they are no longer the preferred places for students.
Examination results can be accessed now with utmost convenience as mobile phone companies are coming up with attractive offers. Sandesh Kumar, a 16-year-old employee at a cyber café in Vasanth Nagar said he did not have many customers on Monday as they could now access their results via SMS.
Another cyber café owner, Shamshuddin A., who has been running his café for 10 years, said: “Over the last few years, I have witnessed a sharp decline in the number of students who come to check the results.”
Kageri’s district fares poorly
Sirsi, the Assembly constituency of Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri, performed poorly in the SSLC exam.
The district’s ranking has slipped 22 places compared to last year. Sirsi recorded 88.31 per cent and was the second in the ranking list in 2012. However, it is in the 24 place this year with a pass percentage of 79.92.
‘Distinctive’ result
Priyanka M., a visually-challenged student from Surana College, Jayanagar, scored 517 marks out of 600.
She was given financial and residential support by Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled.
“I studied using recordings and scanned copies of all the notes. I kept calm and began preparations in the beginning of the year itself,” Priyanka said.
Her parents Mallappa V.P., an agriculturist, and Rekha M.P., a homemaker from Hattragi village in Belgaum district, were ecstatic after knowing the results.
“I expected a distinction. I told the answers to the scribe, who was not from the same combination as I was,” she added.
Priyanka's favourite subject was psychology. She aims to become a teacher after pursuing BA.
Zero pass
As many as 35 schools in the State, including 30 unaided and five aided schools, recorded zero pass percentage in the SSLC examinations.
D. Venkateshiah, Director of Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board, said, “We cannot take action on unaided schools. However, deputy directors of public instruction will issue notices to aided schools to take steps to improve the results.”
Forty-four unaided colleges recorded zero pass percentage in the II PU exams.
