Amid a political storm, Mohammed Nalapad Haris, general secretary of the Bengaluru city Youth Congress and son of N.A. Haris, Congress MLA, surrendered before the police on Monday after he was charged with assaulting a youth in an upmarket cafe.
Around 10.30 a.m., as a crowd of protesters gathered outside the Cubbon Park police station demanding action against him, Mohammed Nalapad arrived in an autorickshaw with his friends and surrendered. The police had revised the FIR filed on Sunday to include an attempt to murder (Section 307 of the Indian Penal code).
Mohammed Nalapad was not traced right through Sunday, when the complaint was lodged. But, action was taken against two police officials for “failing” to arrest him on Sunday evening.
In all, seven persons have been booked in the case for assault on Vidvat L., son of a businessman in the city. The other arrested include Arun Babu, Manjunath, Mohammed Abras, Balakrishna, Abhishek Murali, and Mohammed Nafi. The arrests were made based on CCTV footage that showed them attacking the victim.
Mohammed Nalapad was produced before the 8th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) court on Monday evening. A bail application has been submitted and the court has directed the accused to be remanded in police custody for two days.
The victim, who had suffered fractures on the face and ribs, continues to undergo treatment at Mallya Hospital.
