Karnataka looks to AP to tide over shortage of anti-HIV drugs

All 61 ART centres in the State hit

October 22, 2014 12:41 am | Updated May 23, 2016 06:31 pm IST - Bangalore:

Unable to manage the frequent stock-out of vital anti-HIV drugs in the State, the Karnataka AIDS Prevention Society (KSAPS) has now requested the Andhra Pradesh AIDS Control Society to share 25 lakh ZLN tablets (a combination of Zido-vudine, Lamivudine, Nevirapine) with the State. More than 75 per cent of the 1.09 lakh people who are on ART in the State are on a ZLN-based regimen in the State. An acute shortage of these drugs has hit patients in almost all the 61 anti-retroviral therapy centres in Karnataka.

KSAPS Joint Director (Care and Support Treatment) D. Jayaraju has emailed the request letter to Andhra Pradesh Regional Coordinator Emmanuel and Andhra Pradesh Joint Director (Care and Support Treatment) Dayanand Rao on October 9. A copy of the letter is available with The Hindu .

The ZLN regimen is among the crucial drugs that prevent multiplication of the virus and reduce its presence in the blood.
