The HAL police rescued a 35-year-old jeweller from his abductors from near Avalahalli bridge here on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. One of the four kidnappers was arrested.
According to the police, Ramdayal, owner of Suguna Jewellers in Doddanekkundi, was returning home from his shop on Thursday night when a gang of four armed men intercepted him en route and demanded money. When he said he had no money, the gang forced him into their car and drove around Kadubisanahalli, Bellandur and K.R. Puram. Later they called Ramdayal’s family using his mobile phone and demanded a ransom of Rs. 10 lakh for his release.The abductors asked the family members to come to the Avalahalli bridge with money.
The family members informed the police. Four teams were formed to rescue the victim. The police told Deendayal, brother of Ramdayal, to go the designated place with an empty briefcase while manypolicemen in plainclothes followed him.
When Deendayal reached Avalahalli bridge, the kidnappers called him on his mobile phone and instructed him to throw the briefcase down from the bridge. When he did so, policemen chased the gang members who went to pick up the briefcase, the other team surrounded the car in which Ramdayal was held captive and rescued him.
The police managed to catch a member of the gang identified as Madhu Kumar (25) from Kolar, the other three fled.
“We have got clues about the three others who are on the run and will be arresting them soon,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) T.D. Pawar said.
