Jagjivan Ram memorial award for Jayanna

Dalit leader M. Jayanna (66) from Chitradurga district has been selected for the prestigious Babu Jagjivan Ram memorial award for 2015-16.

Social Welfare Minister H. Anjaneya told presspersons here on Monday that a five-member selection committee headed by Kannada Development Authority L. Hanumanthaiah shortlisted the name of Mr. Jayanna.

Birth anniversary

The 109th birth anniversary of the late Deputy Prime Minister will be observed on Tuesday. The annual award, comprising a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh and a citation, will be conferred on the Dalit leader by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, at the Banquet Hall of the Vidhana Soudha on Tuesday.

Mr. Jayanna, born on June 3, 1950 in Agasana Kalli in Chitradurga district, has been involved in the Dalit Sangharsha Samithi movement.

In 1981, he participated in the Bhoo Chaluvali (movement for land) in Chitradurga district and fought for internal reservation among SCs in promotions.

For 2014-15

Dalit leader N. Muniswamy (62) from Kolar district has been selected for the award for the year 2014-15.
