“I am extremely interested in management studies and was overjoyed after getting into a business management course in Christ University. But now, after the re-evaluation of my II Pre-University Course (PUC) exam papers, I don’t know if I will be allowed to continue in the college,” said an unhappy Amit N., after learning he had failed mathematics, losing 10 marks after re-evaluation.
“I expected to get 85 per cent in II PUC examinations with a total of 95 per cent in physics, chemistry and mathematics. But all I scored was 59.7 per cent. I gave it for re-evaluation expecting at least a 20 per cent hike in my total. But I was shocked to see that 10 marks had been cut in mathematics while the other subject marks remained unchanged,” added Amit, a student of St. Joseph's Boys College.
He is not alone. There are many others who are shattered after having lost marks during re-evaluation.
Angry students
The Department of PU Education’s (DPUE) office in Malleswaram was a site of discontent with angry and upset students gathering there on Saturday demanding to know why so many marks had been cut.
Most, who had given their papers for re-evaluation, were confident there was no scope of losing marks. “I got my photocopy checked by many professors, all of whom said that there was no scope of losing marks anywhere. But after re-evaluation, I have lost eight marks in mathematics and 14 in chemistry. My marks in English and physics remained unchanged though I was expecting much more. I am positive nobody has even checked it,” said one student, who wished not to be named.
“The PU Commissioner told us she will need 10 days to decide what can be done. It still remains unclear as to what is going to be done,” said M. Shivakumar, parent of a student who has lost three marks after re-evaluation in mathematics.
