Irked Mayor seeks repatriation of joint commissioner

City Mayor N. Shanthakumari, irked reportedly by the “careless and unsatisfactory” response from the joint commissioner of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) south zone, has sought his repatriation to parent department.

The issue came to head during a routine inspection of J.P. Nagar ward in Jayanagar Assembly constituency on Thursday. Noting that a “black spot” (where garbage is dumped routinely) had not been cleared, she took the official to task.

A senior official, who was present during the inspection, told The Hindu on condition of anonymity, that the joint commissioner said his subordinates did not cooperate with him and retorted that he could not clear the black spot himself. The Mayor reportedly told him that his response was unbecoming of an official in his position. “The joint commissioner then told Ms. Shanthakumari that she should not speak to him in such a manner in front of other officials and members of the public.”

Ms. Shanthakumari told The Hindu that she had received complaints about the official from even Jayanagar MLA B.N. Vijayakumar. “His responses were irresponsible. I have written to BBMP Commissioner recommending that the official be repatriated to his parent department.”

The joint commissioner was unavailable for comment.
