Government focus on IT sector required, says N.R. Narayana Murthy

July 10, 2013 01:31 pm | Updated 01:31 pm IST - BANGALORE:

Infosys is considering an expansion of its businesses in the Hubli-Dharwad region, Infosys Chairman N.R. Narayana Murthy told Minister for Information Technology S.R. Patil during the latter’s visit to Electronics City here on Tuesday.

According to a release from the government, Mr. Murthy told Mr. Patil that the IT sector could create thousands of jobs with minimum land and power, compared to other industries. Besides, Bangalore contributed almost 50 per cent to the State’s GDP, mainly thanks to the IT industries. The IT companies in the State also accounted for about 36 per cent of India’s IT exports. So, the government needed to focus on the sector, Mr. Murthy said.

The meeting comes two days before the State budget is to be announced. Coincidentally, Friday is also a big day for Infosys, which will announce its quarterly results on the same day.

Infosys directors S. Gopalakrishnan, S.D. Shibulal and Ramadas Kamath also met the government team.

Tier II cities

Earlier, Mr. Patil assured Mr. Murthy that the State government was committed to the growth of the IT and biotechnology sectors. They also discussed ways to develop industries in tier two cities, the release said.
