Was it a lizard? A snake? Perhaps a kangaroo! No, a penguin maybe? Imagination ran wild at the Lalbagh flower show where the ‘Mega hand’ floral display looked like anything but a hand.

Visitors to the glass house on the inaugural day of the Independence Day flower show on Wednesday were baffled by the fruits and vegetables one ‘hand’ held — it was meant to symbolise growth and production — even as the other one was shown holding clusters of germinating seeds.

It is perhaps fortunate, or at least more entertaining, that the Horticulture Department officials have not put up a board describing the display.

Missing direction

The flower show is showcasing two concepts — roof garden and vertical garden — that could be useful in this space-starved city. Unfortunately, information about these displays is hard to come by. There are no sign boards and not many officials to show people around, so many visitors returned with no idea that such displays were part of the show.

“A board providing information about what visitors can look for and where will be of immense help,” said B. Ranjith, a visitor.
