An 18-year-old employee of a guest house in the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) campus was arrested for allegedly stealing jewellery of a guest lecturer.

According to the police, the lecturer and research scientist, Professor Vidya Raghunath, was staying in the guest house in the campus. She had kept some ornaments in a bag in her room. Sadashivanagar police said that the youth, Mahesh, stole some cash on November 7. When it went unnoticed, he stole some gold valuables the following day. The professor then filed a complaint with the police.

Initially, the police suspected an outsider. However, during investigation, they found that there was no forced entry into the guest house. While questioning all the guards and house-keeping staff in the campus, they found Mahesh’s behaviour suspicious. Upon further questioning, Mahesh allegedly confessed to the crime.

Police said that they found the ornaments in his room. Mahesh, from Thyamagondlu, had been employed in the campus since just two months.
