The Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has slammed the ruling Congress’ “ploy” to postpone elections to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council.
“The government is trying to buy time to hold the elections, fearing defeat,” alleged Opposition leader in the Legislative Assembly Jagadish Shettar.
Rajajingar MLA and former Law Minister S. Suresh Kumar said he “failed to understand the logic” of the Supreme Court order, considering it was not pinned to the issue of delimitation or reservation.
“We have to bow to the order of the Supreme Court, but it is a surprising one,” he said. “One hardly expects the Supreme Court to intervene after the calendar of events is announced and the countdown to file nominations has begun.” The party would have to “wait and see how many more ploys the Congress would use to postpone the polls,” Mr. Kumar added.
Mr. Shettar said survey reports had suggested a “clear win” for the BJP if the elections were held now. “The voters would teach a fitting lesson to the Congress in the polls,” he added.
