A study of the education sector in the State has revealed that the Hyderabad Karnataka region leads in the school dropout rate during the last two academic years (2011-12 to 2013-14).
Of the Top 10 constituencies in school dropout rate during this period, seven are from the Hyderabad-Karnataka region. Shorapur, a reserved constituency in Yadgir district, leads the pack with 7,673 students dropping out. Other constituencies in the Top 10 are Chittapur (SC) with 6,941, Kalburagi North with 6,719, Bhalki with 5,739, Jewargi with 5,477, Kushtagi with 5,474 and Sedam with 5,243.
The study, conducted by IndiaGoverns Research Institute, a private organisation, was released on Thursday.
A consolation is that the constituency with the highest allocation in the education sector during 2013-14 happens to be Raichur Rural, which is in the H-K region. It got Rs. 43 lakh and around Rs. 8 lakh in teachers’ grant.
The report further states that the dropout rate is the highest — 48 per cent — among SC/ST students than any other group. About 1,38,000 SC/ST children left schools by 2013-14 from among those who were in class 1 to class 5 batch during 2011-12.
Executive Director of the institute, Veena Ramanna, said government should start putting out Assembly constituency-wise data so that people, and even elected representative, would be aware of the socio-economic status and the works to be carried out in their constituencies. She said that such data would further strengthen democracy.
