A housekeeping staff was crushed to death after he got stuck between the elevator doors at an apartment complex in Bilekahalli on Bannerghatta Main Road on Thursday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Perumal (24), a resident of Doresanipalya and was working in Pride Apartment.

Perumal went to the sixth floor of the apartment for cleaning and after completing his work, wanted to go down. When he got into the lift, its doors did not close, police enquiry revealed.

He is suspected to have pressed the button repeatedly but the door failed to close, and while he was about to step out of the lift, the door suddenly closed and he was crushed between them. One half of his body was outside the lift and the other was inside, a senior police officer said. “Then the lift moved up and down on the same floor a few times before coming to a halt. The incident came to light when the residents waiting for the lift went to the sixth floor and noticed Perumal crushed to death between the doors,” said a senior police official. He said, “They tried opening the door but could not as it was jammed. The Fire and Emergency Services personnel and the police rushed to the spot and released the door and retrieved the body.”

H.S. Revanna, DCP (South), said that the police had sought lift maintenance record from the apartment’s association. “We will check the condition of the lift and then take action,” he said.
