The Karnataka High Court on Friday suggested that the State government take up a fast-track pilot project to alleviate malnutrition.
A Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice B.V. Nagarathna, made this suggestion during a hearing on a public interest litigation petition that the court had initiated suo motu, based on a letter written by an NGO to the Chief Justice last year.
When the government submitted that steps had been taken to provide cooking gas connections and electricity supply to all anganwadis so that children were given freshly prepared food, the Bench said the priority should be to alleviate malnutrition, though providing infrastructure was also important.
The Bench asked the government to submit details of expenditure on provision of food and healthcare to malnourished children.
Meanwhile, the committee formed by the High Court on malnutrition, in its interim report has recommended identifying the extent of malnourishent in children in two months.
Yeddyurappa's case
The High Court adjourned till Monday the hearing on the petition seeking anticipatory bail filed by the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and his sons B.Y. Vijayendra and B.Y. Raghavendra, and son-in-law R.N. Sohan Kumar.
The CBI, meanwhile, opposed the grant of anticipatory bail stating that their custodial interrogation was essential, as it had to complete the investigation within the time fixed by the apex court.
The petitioners had moved the High Court after a Special CBI court refused to grant them anticipatory bail in a case related to alleged receipt of kickbacks from mining companies.
