Alert night beat police caught a 23-year-old habitual offender who had been released from prison a week ago and found stealing valuables from a private firm in Seshadripuram in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Ravi Thapa, a native of Nepal and settled in the city, had been arrested by Chandra Layout police in a case of house-break/theft in 2014. He was convicted for two years and released on June 10. However, on Tuesday night, Thapa gained entry into a firm by breaking open the window grills, ransacked the office and pocketed Rs. 15,000 and an ATM card.

Luck ran out for him, when he accidentally confronted Head Constable Zaheer Ahmed and his colleague Madhu M., who were on night rounds. Sensing trouble, Thapa tried to escape, but the duo gave him a hot chase and nabbed him. The duo recovered the cash and ATM card along with a screw-driver and a crowbar used by Thapa to break into the firm premises.

A case of theft has been registered and he has been sent back to Parappana Agrahara prison.
