As many as 10 of the 120 prisoners, who underwent medical examination in the Bangalore Central Prison in Parappana Agrahara on Friday, are suffering from acute cardiac ailments, and three of them need immediate surgery.
“The health condition of the inmates of the Bangalore Central Prison is worrisome. At least eight male and two female inmates, who have cardiac problems, need immediate surgery,” said S. Ramesh, Chief Executive Officer, Veerayogi Institute of Medical Sciences.
Dr. Ramesh led a medical team that conducted a health camp on the prison premises. The Lions Club of Bangalore organised the camp for the benefit of the prison inmates.
As part of the camp, scanning and electrocardiogram tests were conducted.
Dr. Ramesh said that they had informed the prison authorities that of the 120 prisoners that they examined, at least 10 of them need immediate medical attention.
He added that a team of doctors has offered to conduct surgeries on prison inmates for free.
Officials of the Prison Department told presspersons that they were aware of the fact that the prison inmates had several health-related issues.
Sources also said that the prison management had written to the government seeking approval to provide medical care for ailing prisoners.
Prison officials added that they have no other option but to wait for the government’s nod to provide necessary medical treatment for prison inmates with heart-related ailments.
