A police head constable has been booked on charges of beating up a 38-year-old private firm employee in Subramanyapura on Tuesday night. The incident occurred after the victim demanded a receipt for a fine for smoking in public.

The injured Dinesh, a resident of Gowdarapalya, filed a complaint against the policeman after getting treatment in a private hospital. Dinesh was outside a hotel and smoking when night beat head constable, identified as Siddalingaiah, told him that he violated a rule by smoking in public.

Siddalingaiah demanded that Dinesh pay Rs. 200, which Dinesh agreed to do and demanded a receipt. Siddalingaiah refused to give the receipt, which led to a heated argument.

In the melee, Siddalingaiah beat up Dinesh while other customers and the hotel staff watched in horror.

Dinesh, who sustained serious injuries, is undergoing treatment in a private hospital. He received 25 stitches on his face. He lodged a complaint against Siddalingaiah with the Subramanyapura police.

However, Subramanyapura police said that Dinesh was found standing in a group outside the hotel and was found smoking.

Siddalingaiah asked him to leave the place but he refused which led to a fight between the duo. They also alleged that he was drunk.

However, Deputy commissioner of Police (South) H.S. Revanna said, “No one came and complained to me and there is no such complaint registered. But after I got to know about the incident, I have asked the police inspector to conduct an enquiry and file a report. Based on the report we will take further action.”
