HC orders issue of notice to SEC

The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday ordered issue of notice to the State Election Commission (SEC) in connection with an issue related to holding elections to the newly notified Bangalore Metropolitan Planning Committee (BMPC).

Justice Ram Mohan Reddy on Tuesday passed the order when the court was informed by the Additional Advocate-General H. Kantharaja that the government had written to the SEC asking it to hold elections to the BMPC, but the SEC had written back indicating that the government cannot dictate terms to it to issue calendar of events to conduct elections.

The government in December had issued BMPC Rules after the High Court pulled up the State government for not constituting the BMPC despite a clear mandate in the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, as amended in 1994.
