The Karnataka High Court on Thursday ordered issue of notice to the State government on a PIL petition, which has sought directions to ensure welfare of construction labourers, including payment of compensation in cases of death in construction sites.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice S. Sunil Dutt Yadav passed the order on a petition filed by the All India Central Council of Trade Unions.

The court has given four weeks to the State, its authorities, including Construction Workers Welfare Board, and others to file their responses.

The petitioners have sought a specific direction for payment of ₹25 lakh as ex gratia compensation to the families in cases of death of labourers, and ₹10 lakh as ex gratia compensation in cases of injuries to labourers.

The migrant labourers are living in inhuman conditions in the city, it has been alleged in the petition while pointing to the death of three labourers due to cholera in a labour camp attached to a private builder, near Varthur, in December last year.
