The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday directed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to put up display boards containing the names and addresses of the members of the respective ward committees and names of pourakarmikas deployed, in each ward office within two weeks.
A Division Bench comprising Justice Jayant M. Patel and Justice S. Sujatha issued the directions during the hearing of PIL petitions on various issues related to the city’s garbage problem and solid waste management.
The Bench also directed the Palike to publish the names and contact numbers of the contractors, who are responsible for providing the service of pourakarmikas, on the display boards.
The names of all the pourakarmikas, whether they are on the rolls of the BBMP or any other pourakarmikas or any contract employees in capacity as pourakarmikas or otherwise engaged through the contractor for discharging the work in that respective ward, should be displayed on the board, the Bench said.
As it was informed to the court that new officers, who are on training at present, would be deployed for wards, the court directed BBMP to deploy or depute such officers for supervising the work of the ward committee and the staff engaged by the BBMP either itself or through contractors.
Meanwhile, the Bench said it would not hear the individuals representing NGOs during the hearing of the PIL petitions while stating that NGOs or their representatives could participate in the proceedings by filling necessary applications as per the norms through the advocates.
