The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) does not give permit for hazardous industries in areas that have high population density, said KSPCB Chairman Vaman Acharya.
Speaking on the occasion of Chemical Disaster Prevention Day, a day after the 29 anniversary of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, Mr. Acharya said the KSPCB follows rules very stringently when it comes to such industries. “Even requests for expansion of such industries have not been given,” said Mr. Acharya.
The workshop had senior officials of the Inspectorate of Factories and Boilers and the State Fire and Emergency services participating and speaking on the need for better disaster management practices.
The disaster management and evacuation procedures followed in Fukushima when tragedy struck two years ago was used as a model to explain how citizens can be better prepared and trained for such eventualities.
