Birds are posing a threat to flights operating from the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) airport, which is used by military aircraft and helicopters, VVIP and private jets. HAL officials blame the ‘bird menace’ on a clogged drain adjacent to the airport. Following instances of birds causing accidents, it has drawn the attention of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to the problem.
“The storm water drain near the airfield carries sewage along with plastic bags, thermocol, coconut shells, etc. Birds are attracted by the vegetation, presence of insects and butcheries that dispose meat. We have therefore requested the BBMP to ensure removal of solid waste in and around HAL airfield, and adjoining extensions on a regular basis,” said Gopal Sutar, spokesperson, HAL, adding that regulating presence of birds in the area is important for safe operation of flights.
BBMP officials, who met representatives of HAL recently, said they are investigating the source of sewage and waste, which ultimately ends up near the already polluted Bellandur lake.
“We will trace the source and clean the drain,” said Sarfaraz Khan, Joint Commissioner, Solid Waste Management, BBMP.
Combating bird interference
Meanwhile, HAL has developed a mechanism to combat bird interference. In the past, the company has been taking flak from bird lovers and animal rights activists for shooting birds that threaten flight safety.
“The drainage near the airport is kept clean. As advised by bird experts, we spray insecticide, maintain the grass, clear bushes near compound walls. We have a dedicated team to scare birds using crackers and mild firing in the air. In extreme cases, fire arms are used as per the permitted procedure. We monitor the movement of birds from the tower,” Mr. Sutar said.
HAL has also been distributing pamphlets to residents nearby to spread awareness on how to keep the area clean for flight safety. They have suggested covering some trees towards the golf course with nets to prevent birds from building nests or making them their habitat.
