A guard in charge of ATM security was arrested on Wednesday along with an accomplice for attempting to loot the kiosk he was supposed to be protecting, in Malleswaram, a fortnight ago.

The guard, Satish Naik (23) and his friend, H. Siddesh (26), residents of Nagasandra in Peenya, tried to loot the ATM on December 24. Siddesh, a cab driver, was the mastermind, police said. The two tried to break open the ATM with gas cutters and fled when they could not.

The attempted theft was discovered on December 25 when the morning shift guard saw the damaged ATM and informed the police. Sathish was immediately a suspect as the police couldn’t locate him.

The police said it was tough to track Satish, as he used an alias to get enrolled. He was employed by the Vijayanagar-based Novel Security Agency a week before the attempted theft. Satish joined the security agency in the name of Girish, police said.

The police investigated calls on Satish’s mobile number and tracked him to Laggere.

He led them to Siddesh.

The two, it transpired, had arranged fake identity cards for many people.

A couple of days after the attempt in Malleswaram, police said the two had tried to rob another ATM, belonging to Canara Bank at Madanayakanahalli, but in vain. The duo also tried robbing a jeweller store, but failed again.
