Ankit Goyal topped the electrical engineering stream in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), the results of which were announced on Thursday. Mr. Goyal, from New Delhi, is a graduate of IIT Indore.
The GATE scores will be used for admissions to postgraduate programmes in Indian institutes of higher education with financial aid from the Ministry of Human Resource Development and other government agencies. The score is also used by many PSUs for screening potential employees.
The Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs at Bombay, New Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) jointly conduct GATE. IIT Kharagpur is the organising institute for GATE 2014.
A total of 10.33 lakh candidates registered for GATE 2014 and 8.89 lakh appeared for the exam. For the first time, the three-hour examination was conducted online for all the 22 papers. It was conducted in nine sessions from February 2 to March 2 in 26 States and Union territories. This year, a new paper - ecology and evolution - was introduced.
Electronics and Communication has the largest number of takers, followed by Mechanical, Computer Science and Information Technology, Electrical and Civil engineering.
