Garbage has not been collected and disposed from Jayanagar and surrounding areas for five days now. According to Keshava Kumar N., president of Federation of Jayanagar Residents’ Civic Association, contract pourakarmikas claim that they have not got salaries for the past three months. He has complained to BBMP officials, local councillors and the Mayor, but to no avail.

Mr. Kumar said that residents would stage a protest in Jayanagar 4th Block if the BBMP fails to clear the garbage by Saturday.

Mayor B.S. Sathyanarayana conceded that garbage collection had been affected in all wards of Jayanagar Assembly constituency due to a strike by pourakarmikas. He claimed to have spoken to them and promised to address their grievances. He added that BBMP has cleared the bills of garbage contractors, who had failed to disburse salaries of contract pourakarmikas.

“Garbage is being cleared. But since it had piled up for a couple of days, clearing it entirely will take a while,” he added.
