Garbage issue back to haunt BBMP

March 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - Bengaluru:

The garbage issue seems to be back to haunt the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

People living around the processing unit at Mavallipura have once again alleged that the civic body had failed to process waste properly and address their concerns. Similarly, there is unrest among people living in S. Bingipura, near Bannerghatta Road.

B. Nagena, president of Gottigere Block Congress, said though the BBMP had assured them of sending only 60 vehicles to the quarry pit, around 250 vehicles were dumping waste there. She alleged the police were being bribed to allow vehicles from other places to dump waste. She claimed the leachate was now threatening to pollute Bettadasanapura lake.

Mavallipura resident Ramesh charged that the BBMP had not kept its promises and alleged gross mismanagement at the processing unit.

Darpan Jain, BBMP’s Special Commissioner (Solid Waste Management), claimed the civic body was making an all-out effort to resolve the issues. He said that zonal commissioners had been instructed to send waste only to the designated processing units. At S. Bingipura, leachate recirculation was taken up under biomining methods to enable faster decomposition of waste.
