Days after several thousand tonnes of garbage lay uncollected across the city, cleaning efforts by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) began to gain momentum.
According to a communiqué, the civic authority’s zonal joint commissioners and superintending engineers have been monitoring the black spots in their jurisdiction. “Till today, around 16,000 tonnes of waste has been cleared. On Saturday, 3,600 tonnes of garbage in 408 lorries was disposed of.”
Even so, around 3,000 tonnes remained to be picked up. By Sunday evening, all garbage will be removed completely from the streets, according to the BBMP.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar has asked the BBMP Commissioner and the Principal Secretary of Urban Development Department to submit proposals of the new projects before the next Cabinet meeting on November 6.
About reopening of Mavallipura landfill, the Commissioner has been advised to evolve alternative solutions to process existing waste there, besides sending only 30 lorries every day to begin with. BBMP has been told to send only 20 compactors each night to the Terra Firma landfill. Regarding the allotment of land ranging between 50 and 250 acres around the city for processing and disposal of waste, Mr. Shettar asked his Principal Secretary to organise meeting with the Principal Secretary of the Revenue Department and deputy commissioners of Bangalore Rural, Bangalore Urban, Kolar, Chickballapur and Ramanagaram.
