The Bangalore East Division police on Thursday arrested the fifth suspect in the abduction and rape of a postgraduate student on July 11. The suspect, Mohammed Shafiq (27), had been on the run after the arrest of prime suspect Hyder Nasir.

According to the police, Shafiq runs a car battery shop in Fraser Town and second-hand car dealership. He had beaten up the victim’s friend before snatching his wrist watch. He had been disowned by his family, as he had married against their wishes. He kept in touch with only a few close friends and constantly changed his mobile phones and SIM cards. His identity was confirmed by the victim and her male friend. “Now, the priority is to ensure a strong case against the accused,” the official said.

Formal identification parade of suspects will be held before the magistrate at the Central prison.
