Four men suffocated to death while cleaning a manhole in Doddaballapura town on Sunday.

While two of the men were working under a BWSSB contractor to clean the clogged manhole, the other two were locals who tried to save them. Jagan from Andhra Pradesh and Goundar from Tamil Nadu, ventured into the manhole and collapsed due to lack of oxygen.

Locals Muniraju and Madhu heard screams from the manhole and tried to save them but fell into the manhole. When other passers-by noticed clothes left near the open manhole and no sign of people, they alerted the police.

The fire and emergency personnel pulled out the four men with a crane and rushed them to the hospital, where doctors declared them as brought dead.

The Doddaballapura town police have taken up a case against the contractor under death due to negligence and efforts are on to trace him.
