Four persons were killed and five injured in a collision between a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and a lorry on National Highway 66 at Yermal village near Padubidri in Udupi district on Monday.

Superintendent of Police M.B. Boralingaiah told The Hindu that one person died on the spot. Three travelling by the SUV, who sustained severe injuries, died on the way to hospital.

The dead have been identified as Shaji, Vijayan, Shanthi, and Jayanti.

Five persons in the SUV have been taken to two private hospitals: four to A.J. Hospital in Mangalore, and one to the Kasturba Hospital in Manipal. Mr. Boralingaiah said that the destinations of the two vehicles were not clear.

He said that according to eyewitness accounts given to the Padubidri police, the SUV was going from Kollur to Mangalore, while the lorry was going in the opposite direction, from Mangalore to Udupi.
