The Criminal Investigation Department on Thursday arrested four persons in connection with the misuse of Chief Minister’s Relief Fund using fake medical bills. The accused have been identified as Amoghappa, a resident of Kalaburagi, M.K. Kiran from Tumakuru, C.M. Nagaraj Shetty and Shankar from Mandya.
According to the police the accused are involved in 54 cases where they managed to siphoned off Rs 3.39 crore from the CM fund.
They would approach poor and gullible villagers and promise them to get money from the fund and take their ID and ration card copies. Using the photocopies, they would prepare fake bills from reputed hospitals and apply to the fund through the local representatives to get the amount sanctioned.
The accused had not only forged the medical bills of various hospitals in the State but also from Maharashtra, the CID investigations found.
The scam came to light when alert staff of the CM grew suspicious and got one of the medical records verified to find that it was faked in October 2015.
They filed a complaint with the Vidhana Soudha police and the case was transferred to the CID for a detailed probe.
