Four girls drowned in the Dadamghatta tank, coming under Dibburhalli police limits in Sidlaghatta taluk of Chickballapur district, on Tuesday.

The tragedy occurred when the girls went to the tank to wash clothes.

The police gave the names of the victims as Mallika (15), Munirathna (15), Nandini (14) and Nalina (11). All the victims belong to Dadamghatta village under Palicherlu grama panchayat limits in Sidlaghatta taluk, the police said.

While Mallika and Munirathna were the students of Government High School at Dibburhalli, Nandini and Nalina were studying at Government School in Dadamghatta.

The parents of all the victims are labourers, it was learnt. Three girls attempted to rescue one of their friends after she reportedly slipped in to the tank. However, all the four drowned.

This is the second drowning incident reported in two days. On Monday, four boys from an orphanage drowned while swimming in a lake in Kanajenahalli Gate in Rangasthala in Chickballapur.
