Former Chief Minister D. Devaraj Urs' centenary year celebrated

The government will celebrate the birth centenary of former chief minister D. Devaraj Urs on August 20 with a grand unction and announcement of a slew of schemes in the name of the leader of backward classes movement in Karnataka. This year is being observed as “Devaraj Urs Year.”

In reply to a question by MLC M.D. Lakshminarayana in the Legislative Council on Monday, Social Welfare Minister H. Anjaneya said that the government has also submitted to the Central Government a proposal on releasing a postal stamp in the name of Devaraj Urs.

The schemes to be announced during Devaraj Urs Year are 100 post-matric hostels, merit award for 2,500 backward classes students who secure more than 90 per cent marks and foreign study scholarship for 100 backward classes students. Rs. 5 crore has already been announced to develop his house at Kallalli in Hunsur.

The minister said that a state-level committee will be constituted soon to chalk out plans for celebrations.
