Here's yet another opportunity for motor enthusiasts to catch up with some of the vintage beauties that will be paraded on Sunday.

As part of the 125th anniversary celebrations of The Taj West End, a vintage car rally has been organised with the theme ‘Breathe Easy' to promote a cleaner and greener Bangalore.

Hallowed names

Fabled names such as Wolseley, Jaguar, Morris, Mercedes, Plymouth, Chevrolet, Daimler, Ford, Austin and Buick will be among the 60-odd yesteryear queens which would be brought by Karnataka Vintage and Classic Car Club (KVCCC), in association with The Taj West End and the Prestige Group. “Bangalore hasn't seen these cars in years. It will surely be a treat for all car lovers. We also hope to motivate the younger generation to [look at their] heritage on wheels,” KVCCC secretary Ravi Prakash told presspersons here Thursday.

“Some 17 two-wheelers, including Aerial, Triumph, Norton and others will be part of the rally,” he added.

The oldest car

The 1909 Wolseley, owned by Mr. Prakash, will be the oldest car participating in the rally. Wheeled out by Birmingham-based Wolseley Motor Ltd., he acquired this prized possession from the erstwhile royal family of Cooch Behar.

“All the vehicles were selected based on how well they ran after restoration,” he added.

KVCCC president Sulaiman Jamal said: “We are limiting ourselves to a small number as it will be manageable by us and the traffic police. Fear of our vehicles getting damaged by two-wheelers zipping in between our vehicles is always there.”

The owners generally get the spare parts from Mumbai, Kolkata, or order them online.

The event

The rally will be flagged off by Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda at 10.30 a.m. on Sunday at The Taj West End and will wend its way towards Basaveswara Circle, Cubbon Park, M.G. Road, UB City and back to The Taj West End.
