In three separate incidents, four engineering students and a diploma student died after they drowned in different lakes in the outskirts of the city.
Two engineering students drowned when they went for a swim in Manchanabele Dam on Wednesday evening, the Tavarakere police said.
The deceased are Nagesh of Channapatna and Darshan from Chikmagalur. Both were 23 and students at Reva Institute for Engineering and Technology in Yelahanka. Nagesh's body was found Thursday afternoon while Darshan's body is yet to be traced. The police said the duo had gone with five other friends to the popular picnic spot. They entered the water, and when Nagesh started drowning, Darshan went to his rescue, but both drowned. Their friends informed the police in the evening.
In a lake
The other tragedy was reported in a lake at Venkatagirikote village in Vijayapura Police Station limits onThursday. The victims are Jayanth and Karthik, both 20, and second year BE students of M.S. Engineering College at Sadahalli. According to the police, the duo along with their friend Pavan, were walking around the lake when Karthik, who tried to wash his shoe, fell into the water. Jayanth, in a futile bid to rescue him, also drowned.
Fatal party
In yet another case reported atop Savanadurga Hills in Magadi police limits on Tuesday, Ranjith (18), a first-year diploma student of Santinikethan College, drowned in a pond. He was a resident of Ramohalli near the Big Banyan Tree on the outskirts of the city.
The police said he had gone there along with his friends to celebrate a birthday party. Ranjith and two others got into the pond. However, Ranjith got stuck in the slush and drowned. The body was recovered on Wednesday.
