Days after the police heaved a sigh of relief as New Year’s Eve passed off without any untoward incident, they arrested seven men, including two rowdy-sheeters, for assaulting a bike rider, his brother and a woman on that night.

The assault occurred in Mottappanapalaya, Indiranagar 6th stage. It was captured on two private CCTV cameras.

The footage shows a gang of 10 to 12 men, in an inebriated state, dancing on the road, partying and obstructing traffic on the pretext of wishing everyone on new year. A bike with a rider, another man and a woman is seen approaching them, and it hits one of the revellers.

The revellers assault the bike rider, causing the two-wheeler and the people rising pillion to fall down. The revellers then begin assaulting the rider one after the other. They even attacked an onlooker who tried to stop the assault.

The victims, who are said to be from Darjeeling in West Bengal, did not lodge a complaint with the police. But when CCTV camera footage of the assault went viral on social media, the Indiranagar police took up a suo motu case.

On Tuesday, they picked up seven men, including two rowdies, for questioning. The two rowdies are Lokesh and Ambarish. Both are residents of Indiranagar.

The others are Shekar, 19, Vinod Kumar, 19, Nandish, 19. The names of the other two are not known.

The police are on the lookout for the others who were involved in the assault. Police termed the incident as a case of road rage.

Additional Commissioner of Police (East) Seemanth Kumar Singh said, “It was a case of road rage, and the incident occurred on New Year’s Eve. Since we have footage, we have taken up a suo motu case and have arrested five persons.”
