Fishing in Silk Board junction

July 30, 2016 07:38 am | Updated 07:38 am IST

Some people just look at the brighter side of things. What else could one say about a group who brought out make-shift nets to catch fish on the flooded Silk Road junction. Praful, a techie, was among those who were amused by this sight on Friday morning. But police personnel quickly put an end to this enterprise.

Bike ambulance deployed

A bike ambulance was pressed into service after Hafeeza, a 60-year-old resident of Banashankari, fell unconscious. As roads were jammed, GVK EMRI sent a bike ambulance at 8.10 a.m. The paramedic administered first aid and stabilised her until an ambulance could reach the spot. "Our ambulances are fitted with GPS. Drivers avoid routes that are jammed," said Syed Suhale Parveez, senior manager, GVK EMR.

Foreign goats

Zohaib Mohammed, a resident of Kodichikkanahalli, woke up in the middle of the night worrying about his foreign goats, which were kept in the basement of his supermarket. "The basement was flooded at 3 am. They were very scared. In the middle of the night, I had to bring racks to keep them safe from the water." The goats have been imported from Australia and Iran. They have been reared as pets and are fed only fruit.

Inflated rafts come handy

Emergency personnel used rafts to rescue stranded residents. Long-time residents were reminded of the October 2005 flooding near Puttenahalli lake. That was the first time rafts were deployed. The other time rafts were pressed into action was in August 2014 when the PESIT complex, reportedly built next to wetlands, was flooded. Students were stranded in the campus.

Snake spotting

Throughout Friday, snake rescue volunteers of the BBMP were inundated with phone calls from Kodichikkanahalli, HSR Layout and BTM Layout about snake sightings.

“Five cobra hatchlings were rescued in Uttarahalli, a dozen snakelets in Jayanagar and a cobra, which had entered a home in Jayanagar,” said Chandrashekar, BBMP rescue volunteer, West Zone.
