A financier was hacked to death by a gang of assailants in Cottonpet on Saturday morning. The deceased was identified as Babu Singh (48), a resident of the area. He was found dead on the busy OTC Road by passersby around 10.50 a.m., who alerted the police. Police sources said that according to eyewitness accounts, three persons in an autorickshaw blocked Singh’s path and hacked him to death. Police sources said the assailants had thrown chilli powder at his eyes.

A senior police official said they had some vital clues from the footage recorded by CCTV cameras installed by two lodges on the road. The police and Singh’s family members suspect that bad relations with a career criminal was the reason behind the attack.

Singh had lent Rs. 2 lakh to a career criminal, Manjunath, and lodged a criminal case against him for non-repayment of a loan.

“A local court had directed Manjunath to repay the loan or face punitive action, a fortnight ago. After that, he threatened my brother with death,” said Manjunath Singh, the victim’s younger brother.
