Abdul Karim Telgi, who was convicted for masterminding a multi-crore fake stamp paper scam, is reported to be in a critical condition. The 56-year-old was admitted to Victoria hospital with meningitis. He has been in hospital for over a week. Doctors said he was put on ventilator and life support after multi-organ failure.

At the time of going to print, doctors had said that Telgi was in a critical state and the next few hours would be crucial.

Telgi was sentenced to 30 years’ rigorous imprisonment in 2006. Two persons were assigned to help him in the Central Prison in Bengaluru. However, soon after Deputy Inspector General D. Roopa’s report on alleged irregularities and preferential treatment to high-profile inmates within the prison hit the headlines, the facilities extended to Telgi and others were withdrawn.
