A traffic policeman attached to the Frazer Town traffic station was allegedly assaulted by an ex-serviceman on Saturday night when he stopped him for a traffic law violation.
According to the police, sub-inspector Shivakumar was monitoring vehicular movement near the Nagavara junction when Balakrishna was allegedly driving his vehicle on the wrong side of the one-way. When Shivakumar stopped him for the violation, Balakrishna allegedly hit him with his helmet, the police claimed.
Shivakumar, who sustained a minor injury was taken to a nearby hospital for first-aid. The sub-inspector who has recovered and is back on duty, said that the police were checking drivers for drunken driving as it was a weekend.
Police said that owing to some repair work, traffic was diverted and allowed only on one side of the road. Balakrishna reportedly pointed out that there was no one-way sign and that he had not violated traffic rules.
But, as Shivakumar suspected him of driving under the influence of alcohol, he tried to check him,. Angered by this, Balakrishna allegedly abused the policemen and hit the sub-inspector with the helmet and manhandled him, police claimed.
When passersby started crowding around the men, the rider even attempted to bite the hand of one of the men who tried to nab him. He was later nabbed by the police with the help of passersby.
Based on the complaint filed by Shivakumar, the Hennur police have arrested Balakrishna, a resident of Hulimavu. He has been booked for assault.
