The former Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) councillor Govindaraju was injured after a gang of three armed men attacked him with sharp weapons in Malleswaram on Monday.

Mr. Govindaraju is a Congress leader and had served as chairman of the Tax and Finance Committee of the BBMP. The incident occurred around 8 a.m. and he is recovering in a private hospital.

According to the Malleswaram police, the two-time councillor from Janata Dal (Secular) was with a few of his supporters near a hotel in Malleswaram when the miscreants attacked and stabbed him thrice.

Quoting eye-witnesses, a police officer said that the miscreants were carrying sharp-edged weapons. “They escaped in their car when the people, also hotel customers, raised an alarm.”

Till now no arrest had been made but the police are conducting investigations, the officer added.

The police are also suspecting old enmity and money transaction to be the reason for the attack.

A few months ago, the victim had joined the Congress and also requested for a ticket from Congress to contest BBMP election. However, when his plea for the ticket was rejected, he contested the election as independent candidate from Sevashrama ward and lost.
